Jacob V. Hudnut, Esq.
("Jake")

JVHJVH3
Jake began his career as a Special Assistant to a Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, working alongside regional leaders in business and government. While earning his law degree from Seton Hall Law, he clerked for a prominent personal injury law firm in Journal Square and wrote winning briefs for litigation at both the trial and appellate levels. Jake was thereafter appointed law clerk to the Honorable Peter J. Vazquez, P.J.Cr. (Essex Vicinage), the Presiding Judge of New Jersey’s largest criminal division, which gave Jake valuable case management experience in homicides and other high profile felonies.

An aggressive advocate for his clients, Jake has represented over 500 persons accused of crimes and has successfully tried many cases to verdict in front of juries with excellent results for his clients. His victories include the acquittal of a client who accepted three kilograms of cocaine by U.S. mail under police surveillance (arguing mistake). He was the first attorney in Hudson County to convince a court to sentence a client to probation despite a statutory presumption of prison after a conviction for second degree weapon possession (arguing defense of others). He saw the case through to the Appellate Division, which upheld the ruling.

In addition to the successful private practice of law in New York and New Jersey with Spar & Bernstein, P.C., Jake serves as court appointed counsel for the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender (Hudson and Essex regions) and was a public defender for the City of Jersey City from 2014 through 2017. He was a featured contributor to the New Jersey Lawyer Magazine June 2012 issue on successful solo and small firm practice. He is active in the Hudson County Bar Association, having been appointed to its Criminal Practice Committee in 2013 and selected to serve as a Trustee in 2017.

Jake was proudly born and raised in the Garden State. He lives in Jersey City, where he was a candidate for city council in 2017 and serves as President of the Harsimus Cove Association. He graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Politics from Montclair State University, where he was twice elected Student Body President. He credits his parents for teaching him the compassion and conviction that inspires him every day to protect and empower his clients.
